THE JANES

A Smithy in the 19th Century

The Janes’ started in Essex, but early in the 19th century James Janes, born about 1805, moved to North London. I don’t know why he moved and I can’t find what happened to his parents (William & Charlotte) or his siblings. Although his brother, John, may have died in 1814 as I did find a Parish Records entry for a John Janes who drowned aged 7 years.

A lot of the male Janes had occupations that involved metal as ironmongers, blacksmiths or whitesmiths.

A blacksmith is a person who creates objects from iron or steel by "forging" the metal. Whereas a whitesmith is a person who works with white or light-colored metal (such as tin) and does finish work, such as filing and/or polishing, on iron to remove black oxides.

The ironmonger in Victorian times held a vast range of goods for the householder, the tradesman and, in rural areas, the farmer. Larger establishments often had their own foundry, which carried out repair works as well as manufacturing their own pieces. In 1851 James Janes Snr had changed occupations from Smith to Ironmonger and his son James Janes Jnr was a Whitesmith.

Thames Iron Works workers and football team

At the beginning of the 20th century at least some of the Janes’ were living in West Ham so this has given me the opportunity of putting a couple of photos of Thames Iron Works and its workers as the Janes may have worked there. (The reason I wanted to include these photos is that Thames Iron Works’ football team turned professional in 1900 and they changed their name and became the team that I support which is, of course, West Ham United.)

Mary Janes (born about 1856), is not included in the 1901 census for 2 reasons, firstly, because she married Henry Abbott on 12/01/1895 in Kensington and secondly, because they emigrated to South Africa. They sailed on a ship called the Guelph which arrived on 15/12/1898. Also, Mary’s sister Susannah (born about 1866), emigrated to South Africa. I wonder if they met up with their little brother Edward (born 1872) when he was in South Africa with the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders during the Boer War.

The following information, about some of the early Janes, was sent to me by one of my contacts (Stephen Dawe-Kuta) and he got the information from the IGI and parish records. Therefore, I am not 100% sure of the information especially as I have assumed which William is the correct link to my Janes. However, I believe my assumptions are reasonable as they are based on occupations and family names. So until some more evidence appears to confirm that these people are related, or not, I’ve put them in and I’ll keep them.
