THE HARRIS

Advert for the family hat business modelled by Hannah Harris.

The Harris’ seem to have always lived and worked in Middlesex they have had a wide variety of occupations including furniture making, travelling salesmen, greengrocers and fish mongers.

The occupation of Samuel and Henry Harris in the 1841 census was Orange M. This had me confused for a long time until I found a web site showing the occupations of Jews in the middle of the 19th century which said a lot of them were Orange Merchants (i.e. they sold fruit).

In the last quarter of the 19th century a large proportion of the family moved into the hat making industry and as shown above the prettier female members of the family used to model the hats that the male members were making and selling.
